CBA Environmental Law Section Honors Environmental Leaders

The Connecticut Bar Association’s (CBA) Environmental Law Section honored Catherine Rawson, Attorney Gregory A. Sharp, and Penelope Chester Sharp (posthumously) with Clyde O. Fisher, Jr. Awards on Tuesday, June 18. The award recognizes individuals or entities who have made a significant contribution to the preservation or enhancement of environmental quality through work in the fields of environmental law, environmental protection, and environmental planning.

Diane D. Duhamel Receives 2019 Pomeranz-O’Brien Award

Diane D. Duhamel received the Pomeranz-O’Brien Award from the Connecticut Bar Association’s (CBA) Workers’ Compensation Section for her contribution and exemplary service to the workers’ compensation system and community. Attorney Duhamel was presented with the award at the 2019 Connecticut Legal Conference during the section’s seminar, “Current Issues in the Workers’ Compensation System.”

“Diane brought the Workers’ Compensation Section from a ‘good-old-boys’ network to an active, thriving, and energetic section that was, and still is, a model for the CBA. She brought diversity and inclusion to the section; she demanded a lot of those who she worked with, but demanded and delivered even more of herself, all for the benefit and betterment of the section and all of its members,” expressed Attorney Mark D. Leighton, who nominated Attorney Duhamel for the award.

Member Spotlight: Dana R. Bucin

On May 16, the Connecticut Law Tribune presented Dana R. Bucin of Murtha Cullina LLP with the 2019 Connecticut Attorney of the Year Award. Awards were also presented to first runner-up Jon Bauer, director of the University of Connecticut School of Law’s Asylum and Human Rights Clinic, and second runner-up Moy Ogilvie of McCarter & English LLP.

Attorney Bucin helped secure the release of two Cuban nationals from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody last year and has given critical help to clients from around the world in gaining legal immigration status.

“It’s not easy to be an immigration lawyer,” shared Attorney Bucin. “Its fighting hard in the trenches, and in immigration courts across the country, and visiting clients in detention centers, and that takes its emotional toll on you.”

Member Spotlight: Jamey L. Bell

Jamey L. BellOn May 6, 2019 Executive Director of Greater Hartford Legal Aid Jamey L. Bell, received the inaugural Anthony M. Fitzgerald Award for Excellence by the Connecticut Bar Foundation (CBF). This award honors legal service providers and attorneys who demonstrate a commitment to the provision of zealous and skilled legal representation for low income clients, including direct client and other activities that ensure that Connecticut citizens have legal representation when facing important civil legal concerns affecting their safety, health, shelter, and survival.

Attorney Bell has more than 35 years of experience as an attorney and policy advocate in the areas of health care access, education, child welfare, and family economic security. She provides day-to-day oversight of Greater Hartford Legal Aid, including administrative, financial, advocacy, personnel, strategic planning, communications, and legislative issues. She serves on the CBA Pro Bono Committee and the Connecticut Judicial Branch Access to Justice Libraries Work Group.

Celebrate with the Stars: A Night of Honor and Inspiration

Over 450 guests were in attendance at the sixth annual “Celebrate with the Stars” event on April 11 at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. President Jonathan M. Shapiro began the night by acknowledging the support of the many dignitaries in attendance, including Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Attorney General William M. Tong, and United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut John H. Durham.

The first recognition of the evening was for members of the bar admitted in 1969, who were honored for their 50 years of practice with Half-century pins.

The awards presentation began with The Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo Pro Bono Award. The winners of this award, as selected by the Pro Bono Committee, exhibit commitment to pro bono service and serve as role models for the profession. This year’s winners were: Rebecca L. Ciota, Jennifer L. Hluska, Brittany A. Killian, Jane I. Milas, and Stephanie B. Nickse.

Retired Superior Court Judge Lynda B. Munro Receives 2019 Ladder Award

The CBA Women in the Law Section, in association with the CBA Young Lawyers Section (YLS) Women in the Law Committee, honored retired Connecticut Superior Court Judge Lynda B. Munro as the 2019 recipient of the Ladder Award at “Pathways to Leadership for Women Lawyers,” held on March 28 at Saint Clements Castle in Portland, CT.

The Ladder Award was created by the YLS Women in the Law Committee in 2007 to honor a woman attorney who has “left the ladder down” for those women to follow in her footsteps. The award is aimed at honoring the efforts of women in the legal profession who have recognized the importance of mentoring and supporting more junior lawyers in their own journeys to success in the profession. Judge Munro has joined a distinguished group of female attorneys, including Former US Attorney for the District of Connecticut Deirdre M. Daly, Justice Maria A. Kahn, Diane W. Whitney, Hon. Anne C. Dranginis, Rosemary Giuliano, and Hon. Elizabeth J. Stewart.

On March 14, 2019, Jeffrey J. White of Robinson+Cole was one of 14 manufacturing leaders invited to the White House for a roundtable discussion regarding issues facing the US manufacturing sector. Attorney White was joined by manufacturing business leaders and government officials to discuss the sustained growth of US manufacturing and how manufacturers are successfully using both developments in technology and workforce training to expand into new markets and grow internationally.

Attorney White leads Robinson+Cole’s manufacturing industry team and regularly represents manufacturing clients throughout the United States and globally. He has represented a cross-section of manufacturing companies ranging from large global companies to family-owned businesses.
